What Forte do Boldró is

Forte do Boldró sits on the ruins of the Forte de São Pedro do Boldró, high above the Mar de Dentro coast. From there the sun sets with Morro Dois Irmãos in the background.

It is the most beautiful sunset spot on the island in the guide's ranking, and it costs nothing. The Ilha Tour ends here.

How to get there and when to go

The viewpoint is in Boldró, near the Projeto Tamar and the Park's Visitor Center. Go by car, buggy, taxi or bus along the BR-363.

The sun sets around 5:30 to 6pm, island time. Arrive 40 minutes early to get a spot. And don't leave too soon: the best color usually comes 10 to 15 minutes after the sun disappears.

It is common for a band of clouds to hide the sun before it touches the sea. It is part of the experience.

With children and on your first day

It is a good plan for your arrival day: a light outing in the afternoon and sunset at Boldró. The viewpoint's ground is uneven, so hold the little ones by the hand.

Continue the afternoon at Praia do Boldró, just below, if the tide is low.

After the sunset

The Projeto Tamar is nearby and has a free talk every day at 8pm. It is the classic end-of-day combination, especially with children.

• Bring insect repellent: the late-afternoon mosquitoes are a nuisance.
• A light jacket helps, because it gets quite windy.
• Have dinner in the area to avoid unnecessary travel.
