Plan B

Rain, rough seas or a cancelled tour

In Noronha the sea is in charge. With a plan B, you don't lose the day.

RainForte Noronha, Museu do Tubarão, a historic walk around the Vila, Tamar. Rain usually passes quickly: head out as soon as it clears.
Strong windSheltered beaches: Porto and Sueste. Avoid exposed trails and the Piquinho.
Rough Mar de DentroHead to the Mar de Fora: Sueste, Leão, Atalaia. Move the boat trip to another day.
Rough Mar de ForaMar de Dentro: Porto, Cachorro, Meio, Conceição, Sancho.
No waves during surf seasonSwap the session for diving, a boat trip or a hike. The next swell usually shows up within a few days.
Cancelled tourReschedule it for the free day. That is what it is there for.
Flight delayLet your pousada and transfer know and adjust the TPA. The first day becomes just a sunset.
The right order

What to book first

1. Flights90 to 180 days ahead
2. Accommodationtogether with the flight
3. TPA and park ticketonce your dates are set
4. Boat, speedboat and private Ilha Tour30 to 60 days
5. Diving30 to 60 days
6. Trails and Atalaiaas soon as booking opens
7. Special restaurants15 to 30 days
8. Buggy or car30 days

Schedule the sea tour for the second or third day: if the sea doesn't cooperate, you still have days to reschedule.

With children

Adjustments for families

  • Swap the Sancho staircase for the boat: you can see the bay and swim without the 200 steps.
  • Sueste, Porto and Conceição are the easiest beaches; Atalaia accepts children who can already swim with a life vest.
  • Split the day into five blocks: breakfast, a sea outing in the morning, a quiet break from 1:30pm to 3pm, a second activity and an early dinner. No sun between 10am and 3pm for babies.
  • Bring armbands, UV clothing, a hat and plenty of snacks. There is no shade on most beaches.
  • The transparent kayak, the Hawaiian canoe and the Tamar talk are usually the kids' favorites.
Bringing a board

Tweaks for a surf trip

  • Travel between November and March and keep some days flexible: swells don't run on a schedule.
  • Check the day's conditions before planning your session: size, wind and tide change from one day to the next.
  • Stay close to Cacimba, Bode and Boldró, and have a buggy or car so you can switch breaks depending on the conditions.
  • Book boat trips, diving and hikes for the flat days, and spend the late afternoon on the Mar de Dentro for the sunset.
  • Breaks, skill levels and safety in the surf guide; flying with your board in how to take a surfboard.

We did this

We did a shorter, private version of the Ilha Tour right after arriving. With a baby, going private let us skip stops and head back earlier. It was the best logistics decision of the trip.
